Google Pixel 5a gets mentioned before the launch of the Pixel 4a
The wait for the arrival of the Google Pixel 4a may soon be coming to an end. The device is supposed to launch next week, but we are already starting to see mentions of its successor, the Google Pixel 5a.
![]()
The new Google Pixel 4a may finally be launched on August 3, but now we get information about the Google Pixel 5a. The Pixel 4a’s successor was mentioned today in the Android Open Source Project. This means that Google is so satisfied with the Pixel 3a’s results that they’re already planning on a new affordable device for 2021. Now, we must only hope that this device doesn’t make us wait too long for it to launch.

Pixel 4a may launch soon, but the Google Pixel 2 will lose support
Google seems to have everything ready for the launch of the new Pixel 4a. However, the arrival of this new device could also arrive with some negative news, for Google Pixel 2 users, since their devices would lose support with the arrival of new Pixel devices.
The Google Pixel 2 can say goodbye to important software updates after getting Android 11. Google initially promised that its devices would get two major updates, and that means that the Pixel 2’s support was supposed to end last year. However, Google then decided to give its devices three major software updates. In other words, the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL will receive a final version of Android 11 when it launches, followed by a couple of security updates before they are finally left without support by the end of the year.
This information was confirmed, in a way, by a developer comment in the AOSP, where we also find the first mention of the Google Pixel 5a. The developer also mentions s list of almost every Pixel device, released and unreleased, where we see that the Google Pixel 4a will launch with Android 10, instead of Android 11.

Apple’s annual iPhone shipments grow, as Huawei takes Samsung’s crown
We have received some interesting Q2 reports in the last couple of days. Said reports show us that Apple has increased its sales in China, and Huawei has finally surpassed Samsung’s sales. Now, we have new data shared by Canalys and the IDC that show everything that happened in the Q2 of 2020.

The global smartphone market suffered a 14 to 16 percent decline in Q2 2020, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that it was all bad. Apple managed to increase its iPhone sales by 25 percent when compared to the same period last year. According to Canalys, Apple’s smartphone shipments reached 45.1 million, while IDC suggests it was a total of 37.6 million. Whatever the case, Apple saw its sales boosted thanks to the iPhone 11 and the 2020 iPhone SE launch.
“iPhone SE will remain crucial to prop up volume this year, amid delays to Apple’s next flagship release,” commented Canalys Analyst, Vincent Thielke. “In China, it had blockbuster results, growing 35% to reach 7.7 million units. It is unusual for Apple’s Q2 shipments to increase sequentially. As well as the new iPhone SE, Apple is also demonstrating skills in new user acquisition. It adapted quickly to the pandemic, doubling down on the digital customer experience as stay-at-home measures drive more customers to online channels.
“Senior Canalys Analyst Ben Stanton stated that going forwards “geopolitical uncertainty also hangs over the global smartphone market. Countries are becoming polarized between the interests of the US and China. In India, for example, Chinese companies now face a wave of negative sentiment. Smartphone vendors need to act, and many are already directing funds to brand marketing to highlight their positive impact in a local region.”
Now, Samsung lost its crown against Huawei, at least during the second quarter of 2020, and we still have to wait and see how things evolve as we will soon see the launch of new Galaxy flagships.

Apple is now the most valuable publicly traded company on the planet
Apple released its third quarter financial report for the fiscal year 2020 a day ago, posting a revenue of $59.7 billion (up 11% on a YoY basis) on top of strong hardware sales. Following the earnings reveal, Apple’s stock went up by 10.47% and it helped the company achieve a market valuation of a staggering $1.84 trillion (via CNBC), the highest market cap of any company in the world.

With that market cap, Apple toppled Saudi Aramco as the most valuable publicly traded company on the planet. State-owned Saudi Aramco – which has held the distinction of being the world’s most valuable publicly-owned company ever since its IPO – currently has a market value of $1.76 trillion as of the market’s closing on Friday.
Apple also announced a four-for-one stock split in its quarterly report, riding on top of a record-breaking quarter that shattered analyst predictions in the wake of the pandemic. The company’s June quarter witnessed double digit growth in the sale of both products as well as services across all markets.

Yesterday we talked about how OnePlus will be launching a different Nord for North America later this year but, it looks like they’re focusing on the 8T already. It just went through Geekbench, revealing the new model number and some of the specs. It looks like it will be powered by the Snapdragon 865 SoC, it’ll pack 8GB o RAM and this variant is already running Android 11. Sadly, by this benchmark we can’t really tell if this is the regular 8T or the Pro, or if it’s the Snapdragon 865 or the 865+. Leaks should start coming in soon as we usually get these around October and November.Microsoft’s Surface Duo will reportedly begin shipping in the week of August 24
Recently the Microsoft Surface Duo went through FCC and Bluetooth SIG certifications which usually means we’re getting closer to the launch date and, it looks like that might be the case. According to a new leak from Twitter, the Duo has started production and will beginning shipping to consumers on the week of August 24th. We were originally expecting it to come out for the holidays but, these certifications recently popped up and multiple Microsoft executives have been showing it off on social media so, this time line makes sense. The leaked specs still include two 5.6in AMOLED displays, the Snapdragon 855, 6GB of RAM, up to 256GB of storage and a 3460 mAh battery.Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5G pre-orders are now live with a $650 credit offer in tow
You may get a free pair of Galaxy Buds Live with Galaxy Note 20 Ultra pre-orders
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 may arrive on September 18
Let’s move on to Samsung as, and we have a lot to cover. First, pre-orders for the Z Flip 5G have begun in the States. These pre-orders will go on until August 6th and if you have an eligible device, you can get up to $650 in trade-ins, meaning you can get this phone for $800. Samsung is also adding six months of Spotify Premium, YouTube Premium and more. Speaking of pre-orders, we have some leaked coupons on Twitter that apparently are from Indonesia. The coupon basically says that if you purchase the Note 20 Ultra you’ll be getting an e-voucher to get the Galaxy Buds Live or the Buds+ for free. The coupon also reveals that the Buds Live will cost around $179 and that pre-orders will run from August 6th through August 19th. Finally, we have a new report with an alleged launch date for the Z Fold 2 and a price tag as well. The report mentions that Samsung and their Korean partners have agreed that September 18 will be the launch date for the Z Fold 2 but, you shouldn’t expect a price cut. The Korean price amounts to $2006 which means customers can expect the same $1980 we had for the original Fold. Oh, and remember that Thom Browne Edition we talked about yesterday? Yeah that will apparently be $3350.Apple confirms the iPhone 12 series will be delayed by a few weeks
Qualcomm hints at a slight delay in the debut of Apple’s 5G iPhones
iPhone 12 lineup and new iPads could launch in October
We know that Apple’s launch timeline is a mess right now, at least when it comes to leaks. A couple of days ago we covered some leaks from Twitter that claimed that we might be getting an online event on September 8th where we would be getting the iPhone 12 line, the new Apple Watch, a new iPad and even AirPower. Now, Qualcomm just shared their quarter earnings and in their Q3 report, they underlined a potential effect on their revenue forecasts due to the “impact of the delay of a 5G flagship global phones” which analysts believe is the iPhone 12. And, this is no secret as Ming Chi Kuo has been predicting a delay for the mmWave iPhones for a long time now. However, Qualcomm’s CFO did say that the delay might be brief as it is only a partial delay. Now, we got a new tweet from Jon Prosser where he claims that the iPhone 12 and new iPads will be coming in October, going along with the delay Qualcomm reported. We’re not sure if this means that we’ll be getting the event until October or, if it’ll get announced on September 8th and we’ll have to wait.Story of the day:
Google Store teaser hints that the Pixel 4a is finally arriving on August 3
A couple of days ago, Jon Prosser leaked that the Google Pixel 4a would be happening on August 3rd after countless delays. Well, today Google just added a “lorem ipsum” page to the Google Store which is actually a puzzle. After you solve this puzzle, it reveals the words “The Google, Just What You’ve Been Waiting For Phone” along with the August 3 date on top of the phone’s silhouette, FINALLY. The lorem ipsum text also reveals the words “Video Chat”, “Lowlight Capture”, “Blur Bokeh”, “Megapixel”, and “Long Lasting Battery”. Just for context, we started covering leaks of the Pixel 4a back in December, and once the pandemic hit it was delayed numerous times. This phone is expected to bring the Snapdragon 730, a 5.81in OLED display, 6GB of RAM and up to 128GB of storage. There’s no word on the XL variant other than those sketchy leaks we got some time ago so, we assume that it won’t happen next week. Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 may arrive on September 18
We’re just days away from the next Samsung Galaxy Unpacked event. We have received countless leaks and rumors, but one more can’t hurt. We recently saw leaked images of the next Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2, and now we also get a possible release date, along with a possible price tag.
According to a new report from South Korea, the new Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 will be released on September 18. Several rumors suggested that this device would arrive with a less expensive price tag, but this report says otherwise. Apparently, the device would be priced at 2,398,000 Korean won, matching the price of its predecessor. If you make a direct conversion, the price of the new Galaxy Z Fold 2 would be $2,006, but it is believed that it will keep the same $1,980 price tag as the original Fold. Now, if you want to go all out, the Thom Brown Edition of the Z Fold 2 is supposed to be available for $3,350.

Apple’s latest 13-inch MacBook Pro and more devices are on sale today
Deals. Let’s start today off with the MacBooks. B&H currently has the latest 13in MacBook Pro for $100 off, meaning it starts at $1399. Just make sure to catch it before tomorrow as the offer will expire. They also have the 16in MacBook Pro for $300 off, leaving that starting at $2100. We also have deals on Jabra headphones, Garmin smart watches and more.Apple’s Q2 numbers show strong iPhone sales in the Chinese market
Let’s talk about sales for a second. We know that Apple was struggling back in February as they reportedly only selling 500k iPhones in China for that month. Now, according to some CINNO research, Apple saw a 225% growth from April-June which resulted in a 13M iPhones shipped during this period. Since then, the iPhone 11 and the new iPhone SE were apparently driving many of the sales, which lead to a 62% growth year-over-year. These numbers aren’t exactly clear but another research note also puts Apple in the second place in terms of growth, with the leader being Huawei.Future Apple AirPods could feature bone conduction for improved audio
We’ve been talking about a lot of Apple patents as of late and now, we have a new one that sheds some light as to what AirPods might do in the future. According to this patent, Cupertino is working on bone conduction technology with normal air-based sound transmission. To put it in a simple way, it would allow them to send audio through two general areas and, since there is nothing really going into your ear canal, you have better awareness of your environment if you want to hear it. However, we know that Apple is notorious for patents and this may not happen soon but it would be nice to see.Samsung is considering to drop Bixby & Galaxy Apps Store as Google offers new mobile apps deal
Alright, now let’s talk Samsung cause we have some possible major news, which we are hoping do happen. For those of you Samsung users that like to disable the Bixby button, we have some good news for you. Samsung is apparently in talks with Google for a deal that would make Samsung push the Google Assistant and get rid of Bixby. This also means that Samsung would stop pushing their Galaxy Apps Store. The two companies are apparently discussing the financial terms and according to Bloomberg, Samsung stated that “they are closely working with Google and other partners to give you the best customer experience”. Google also stated that they won’t be doing the same with other partners. Does this mean you can partner again for a new Samsung Galaxy Nexus? Or Google Play Edition Note 20? Let’s move on to your daily dose of the unhealthy amount of Samsung leaks we have and, they come from trusted sources. Let’s start it off with the Galaxy Buds Live. We have some new renders from Twitter, showing off the Buds in their Black and Bronze color variants and, if you hadn’t seen these before…. These pictures show them from every possible angle, they even show some wing tips that we hadn’t seen which will prevent them from falling off your ear. Moving on to the Z Fold 2, we have a hands on IRL picture which shows the phone booting up but, we can’t really see anything else other than the name. Luckily, the source from the Buds pics posted other renders of the Z Fold 2 as well, showing off the new design. The outer display looks way better than the original Fold, and the camera array looks pretty much like the one we’re expecting from the Note. Other leaks also suggest that we might get a very expensive Thom Browne edition of the Z fold 2 which will retail for around $2800, yeah you heard that right.Story of the day:
OnePlus Nord-series smartphone is coming to the US later this year, reveals Carl Pei
OnePlus’ next Nord-series smartphone might use Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon 690 SoC
And finally the hottest news today have to do with the OnePlus Nord. Actually let’s start calling it the Nord lineup, because we’ve got two separate news that indicate so, one pretty much official. We thought that you would only be able to get the OnePlus Nord in North America through that trial thing were only 50 fans would get it but, apparently that won’t be the case, sort of. Carl Pei just went on an interview and said that the Nord won’t be available in the US once it goes on sale on August 4th but, he said that a Nord-branded phone is set to land on US shores later this year so “you don’t have to feel left out for too long”. As a matter of fact, in one of their Nord promo videos they mentioned the term “OnePlus Series” possibly hinting that the Nord isn’t the only device and, they even have a dedicated “Nord Series” page in their website. On the second report that’s most likely unrelated, it seems that there’s also another, less expensive Nord in the works. XDA also discovered in the latest Oxygen OS update a new OnePlus phone that would use the Qualcomm 690 SoC which is their latest 5G budget solution. Apparently the internal code name is Billie and we don’t have any other information just yet. iPhone 12 lineup and new iPads could launch in October
We keep getting more information suggesting that the new iPhone 12 lineup may launch in October. The latest rumor comes from well-known leaker Jon Prosser, who also believes that we are getting new iPads in the next Apple event.

It seems that Apple may not launch its new iPhone 12 in September like previous years. We have seen tons of rumors and reports claiming that the ongoing pandemic has affected Cupertino’s supply chain and, therefore, the launch of its new devices. Now, leaker Jon Prosser has posted on his Twitter account, that the iPhone 12 and iPads will arrive until October. In a way, this may line up with @ihacktu’s information, where he believes that we will have an Apple event in October, but then again, this event is supposed to deliver a new iPad Pro and Apple Silicone Macs.
Prosser doesn’t specify which iPad model will get a refresh, but rumors mention a new mini-LED iPad Pro and a new iPad Air with an all-screen display and under-display Touch ID.

OnePlus 8T could’ve been spotted at Geekbench
OnePlus is not taking a break. It has recently launched the new OnePlus Nord and the OnePlus Buds, but it seems that it’s also getting things ready to launch the OnePlus 8T.

We usually have to wait until October-November to see the OnePlus’ T series launch, but that doesn’t mean that we have to wait until then to get information about the device. It seems that the new OnePlus 8T has recently passed through Geekbench. A device with model number KB2001 has just appeared running Android 11, with 8GB RAM and the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 chipset. Unfortunately, we can’t know if this was the regular version of the OnePlus 8 T or the OnePlus 8T Pro. It’s also hard to tell if this is the regular Snapdragon 865 or the 865+ processor, but at least we can say that the device reached decent scores, which match the results of other SD865 powered devices.

Apple’s Q2 numbers show strong iPhone sales in the Chinese market
According to recent data, iPhone sales have skyrocketed in China. The last report from Shanghai’s CINNO Research claims that Apple’s Q2 sales have seen a huge leap when compared to the previous quarter.

It seems that Apple’s presence in the Chinese market is growing steadily. Apple started this year a bit slow, as Apple reported that it had only sold 500,000 phones. However, things have improved thanks to the iPhone 11 and the new iPhone SE, and it seems that Apple has managed to sell 7.4 million units. In other words, Apple has managed to see a 225 percent increase in iPhone sales, which also results in a 62 percent yearly increase. We also see a 32 percent increase when we compare Q2 2020 to Q2 2019. Still, this isn’t enough for Apple to take the crown of phone sales in the Chinese market since Huawei still holds first place with 36.6 million sales, followed by OPPO, vivo, and Xiaomi.

Microsoft’s Surface Duo will reportedly begin shipping in the week of August 24
Microsoft’s foldable phone-tablet hybrid, the Surface Duo, is one of the most hotly anticipated devices of 2020. It recently picked up the US FCC and Bluetooth SIG certifications, indicating that an official market debut is around the corner, but Microsoft is still mum on that. However, a fresh leak suggests the device will begin shipping in less than a month.
As per a report from WindowsCentral, production of the Surface Duo is already underway and it will begin shipping in the week of August 24. Lately, multiple Microsoft executives have also appeared rocking the dual-screen device in social media posts and the rumor mill is also into overdrive mode regarding an impending debut.
Surface Duo production has started and will begin shipping to customers the week of August 24th, I'm told. Should be less than a month to go now!
— Zac Bowden (@zacbowden) July 29, 2020
As for the device itself, it will reportedly pack two 5.6-inch AMOLED panels that are joined by a 360-degree hinge. Under the hood, you’ll find the two generations old Snapdragon 855 SoC paired with 6GB of RAM and up to 256GB of onboard storage. A 3,460mAh battery will keep the lights on, while a heavily-skinned version of Android 10 with a tonne of Microsoft’s own solutions will handle the software side of things.
