Pocketnow Daily: Apple Will FINALLY Add THIS to the iPhone’s Camera?! (video)
Apple’s M1 MacBook Pro, Samsung Galaxy devices and more on Cyber Monday
Yes today is Cyber Monday, but since it’ll most likely be more like burned out Tuesday by the time you watch this video, we figured we’d get you deals that’ll still be available. Starting off with Samsung that has had a great holiday when it comes to deals. The Galaxy Z Fold 2 is still $999 if you have an eligible device for trade-in and now it gets sweeter as you get $100 in Samsung credit for accessories. The Z flip 5G is available for just $300, the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra is available for just $599 and the S20 Ultra for $789 so yeah, get the Note or that Z Flip 5G. The S20 FE is available for $189 on trade-in, but if you go to Amazon you can get it for $549 which is a cool $150 discount. Again, all of these deals are trade-in offers and you can get the $100 in Samsung credit. Moving on to the M1 MacBooks, B&H has the 13in MacBook Pro for $1199 which means you’re getting a $100 discount on the entry level variant. The MacBook Air is also $100 off, leaving that at $899. Finally, let’s talk Pixels as the Pixel 5 is $50 off, that leaves the Just Black variant for $649 shipped on Amazon. We have more deals on the Google Pixel 3a, other Samsung products, Intel Macs and more in the links in the description and even more at Pocketnow.comM1 MacBook Pro with mini-LED display could launch sooner than expected
Moving on to rumors and Apple, there’s been a ton of reports for years that Apple is moving to miniLED but, with this latest batch of reports it looks like it’s finally becoming a thing. According to the latest DigiTimes report, Apple is set to launch the first miniLED iPad Pro in the first quarter of 2021 and they will starting mass producing the first MacBook Pro in Q2. Apple’s suppliers from Taiwan are actually happy as their momentum will be growing significantly once these orders come in. Of course, TSMC is also happy as well as, pretty much all of Apple’s products bring their silicon now. More importantly, this report goes along with Ming Chi Kuo’s report which we covered last week where he said we should expect that iPad in the first half of the year and we should get 16in and 14in MacBook Pros in the second half of the year. For those of you that don’t know, miniLEDs bring the similar benefits of OLEDs to LCDs while adding more power efficiency and a wider color gamut at the same time. So yeah, it might not necessarily be a good time to invest in anything, as miniLED could change more things for the better.Samsung may have revealed what we’re getting in future Galaxy phones
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 might cost the same as the Galaxy Z Fold 2
Back to Samsung let’s talk foldables as we got two different things to discuss. First off, Samsung Display’s blog posted two new sketches of devices that could actually become a real thing. The first one shows a tri-folding device both open and closed and the second one shows a rollable device that is being used more as a tablet than a smartphone with it bringing a sliding keyboard. And of course, Samsung is no stranger to doing these kinds of teasers but with them shifting their focus on to foldables, it’s interesting to see what they have in mind. Now, moving on to the real stuff, we have a new report that claims that the Galaxy Z Fold 3 will have the same price tag as the Z Fold 2 at around $2000. And, this is actually both good and bad. It’s good because we know that we’re getting more features like the S-Pen and better UTG, but it’s bad because this is supposed to replace the Note, and I doubt that it’ll work out for Samsung unless they bring the price tag down. Of course it’s too early to tell but, we’ll see if Samsung changes the price tag over time.OnePlus 9 series will consist of not two but three phones
Let’s move on to OnePlus as, it looks like the company wants to keep expanding their line-up once we get the OnePlus 9. We have a new tweet and Voice post from Max Jambor where he gives us the new line up. Apparently it would consist of the OnePlus 9, the 9 Pro and a 9E. Now, of course, Max only tweeted out the names for it but in his voice post he said that it is yet to be seen if the OnePlus 9E will be a more powerful device than the regular 9 or a more budget-friendly offer like the Nord series. Now, we have some new renders for the Let’sGoDigital for both the 9 and the 9 Pro. We’ve already seen other renders before but these go further into which color variants we should expect. The regular line shows 4 different color variants which are the Green we got with the 8T, Gray, Blue and Black. As for the 9 Pro, these renders only show Onyx Black and Ultramarine Blue color variants like we got back with the 8 Pro. We’re expecting these phones mid-March, running on the latest Snapdragon chipset, at least 8GB of RAM and all the bells andStory of the day:
Apple zeroing in on suppliers to get periscope camera modules for upcoming iPhones
And finally, for the hottest news today let’s talk iPhones and their camera capabilities. If you haven’t watched our comparison with the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra, you should.. Cause that iPhone 12 Pro Max kind of won the camera section in everything but the zoom capabilities. Well, according to a new ETNews report, Apple is finally seeking an appropriate “folded” periscope camera solution for the iPhone and they have actually initiated discussions with suppliers. Now, this isn’t anything new as Apple has been filing patents on periscope lens systems since 2014 but they haven’t actually put one on the iPhone. Apparently Cupertino ran into some issues developing this technology as some of it was guarded by other patents. Some insiders also claim that there was a chance that Apple would purchase these from Samsung but, it’s actually pretty unlikely as Samsung would like to maintain a competitive advantage over Cupertino in this technology. If you’re asking when we should expect these, a report from Ming Chi Kuo earlier this year said that we should expect these to come with the 2022 iPhones with Sunny Optical and Semco supplying the components. Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 might cost the same as the Galaxy Z Fold 2
Samsung truly shed the demons of its first foldable device failure when it launched the Galaxy Z Fold 2 earlier this year. In addition to introducing a refined design with an improved hinge mechanism, the Galaxy Z Fold 3 also came equipped with a larger cover display, a high refresh rate 120Hz inner display, a faster processor, a larger battery, and better cameras. However, all those upgrades came at a premium, despite it being a small one. But at $2000, the Galaxy Z Fold 2 ain’t a cheap phone by any means, and is almost on the verge of ‘too expensive for a phone’ tag.
But as per a fresh leak, Samsung will keep the pricing intact for its next foldable phone, which might come as a sigh of relief for potential buyers. Leakster @MauriQHD has tweeted that the Galaxy Z Fold 3 won’t come with a price premium over the Galaxy Z Fold 2, despite all the upgrades that it is rumored to bring to the table. However, the Galaxy Z Fold 3 is still months away, so Samsung’s strategy might change down the line depending on a lot of factors.

Lately, we’ve heard various rumors regarding the Galaxy Z Fold 3, such as the presence of an under-display selfie camera to avoid the aesthetic hassle of a hole-punch cutout, notch, or thick bezels. However, there are also conflicting rumors which point towards the inclusion of a pop-up camera on Samsung’s next flagship foldable phone.
Another noteworthy news making rounds of the leak arena claims that Samsung is modifying the S Pen technology so that the stylus can be used with the upcoming foldable device as well. It actually makes sense, since the larger screen real estate provides a bigger canvas for creative tasks using the stylus. On related grounds, the company is rumored to ship the Galaxy Z Fold 3 with an S Pen – complete with a docking station on the device itself – and will eventually sunset the Galaxy Note line of stylus-toting flagships as early as next year.

M1 MacBook Pro with mini-LED display could launch sooner than expected
We keep getting rumors suggesting that Apple is gearing up to launch its first devices with mini-LED displays. Last week, we were getting a report from The Elec saying that at least one iPad Pro would feature this new display technology and that it would arrive sometime in the Q1 of 2021. And now, a new rumor suggests that we could also get a new M1 MacBook Pro using mini-LED displays shortly after.
According to a report from DigiTimes, Apple could launch its new M1 MacBook Pro with a mini-LED display in the second quarter of 2021. It would benefit several Taiwan manufacturers, as they are getting ready to supply the upcoming Macs’ displays.
“Apple’s suppliers in Taiwan, including LED chip vendor Epistar, testing and sorting specialist FitTech, SMT service provider Taiwan Surface Mounting Technology, backlight board supplier Zhen Ding Technology, cooling solution provider Auras Technology and process equipment maker All Ring Technology, are all ready to gain growth momentum from upcoming shipments for Apple’s miniLED-backlit devices, the sources said.
“The sources continued that Foxconn Technology and Compal Electronics will share the assembly orders for miniLED iPad Pro devices, and MacBook Pro products adopting M1 chipsets will be mainly produced by Quanta Computer and partly by Foxconn.”
TSMC is believed to benefit the most from these new devices, as the company is reportedly taking care of the 5nm chip manufacturing for both the mini-LED iPad Pro and MacBook Pro models. Ming-Chi Kuo had already mentioned that mini-LED production for the upcoming iPad Pros was to take place in the last quarter of 2020, so it is expected to launch in the first months of the upcoming year. He also mentioned that the new 16.1-inch and 14.1-inch MacBook Pros were arriving in the first half of 2021, but we will have to wait a bit longer to see them if this report’s information is correct.

Apple zeroing in on suppliers to get periscope camera modules for upcoming iPhones
Apple is among the only few major smartphone makers out there who are yet to use the periscope camera system on one of their high-end phones, but things might change soon. As per a fresh report from ETNews, Apple is trying to finalize suppliers for folded camera modules – or in simple terms, periscope camera systems – that can help achieve a significantly higher optical zoom range for its next wave of iPhones.
A deal with Samsung appears unlikely, but seems necessary!
The company is reportedly looking for suppliers that have the requisite technical acumen and patents to deliver periscope camera modules, but things are not going to be easy for Apple. Samsung Electronics is said to own key patents regulating the ‘folded camera’ technology, while the sister firm Samsung Electro-Mechanics is a key supplier of those components for Samsung’s own flagship portfolio. “Ball-type actuator is the key to folded camera, and patents related to the actuator are in possession of Corephotonics that was recently acquired by Samsung Electronics,” an industry source was quoted as saying by ETNews.
And due to the aforementioned hurdles, Apple is reportedly not able to design periscope cameras that meet its stringent quality standards. At this point in time, a deal between Apple and Samsung for sourcing periscope camera modules from the Korean company appears unlikely, since Samsung will likely prefer to maintain the competitive edge for its own smartphones by not supplying the technology to its biggest rival. However, the possibility of Samsung eventually joining hands with Apple has not been ruled out in its entirety either.
Earlier this year, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo predicted that Apple’s lineup of iPhones in 2022 will come equipped with periscope cameras. However, as per the report, the company has reportedly locked Semco and Sunny Optical as the key suppliers for periscope cameras that will go inside its iPhones two years from now.

Cyber Monday deal: OnePlus 8 Pro drops another $50!
OnePlus’ first flagship of 2020, the OnePlus 8 Pro was launched at $899 for the base variant and went up to $1000 for the 256 gigs model. On Black Friday, the latter was selling at a discount of $200. Now, Cyber Monday has upped its game, and the device is available for an all-time low of $750.
The OnePlus 8 Pro features a 6.78-inch big Fluid AMOLED display, which has a 3168 x 1440 pixel resolution at 513 PPI. It comes with a 120Hz refresh rate and 19.8:9 aspect ratio. It is covered with 3D Corning Gorilla Glass. It is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 SoC, paired with X55 5G modem. It comes with LPDDR5 RAM and UFS 3.0 storage.

On the optics front, the OnePlus 8 Pro sports a quad rear camera setup: a 48MP Sony IMX689 sensor with f/1.78 aperture and OIS + an 8MP telephoto lens with 3x hybrid zoom, an f/2.44 aperture, and OIS + a 48MP ultra-wide-angle lens with 120-degree field-of-view and an f/2.2 aperture + a 5MP color filter lens. The smartphone packs a 4,510mAh battery that supports 30W fast charging both wired and wireless. It gave me 6-7 hours of screen-on time while on QHD+ resolution at a 120Hz refresh rate. You can extend the battery life by changing the resolution, and read our full review here.
The phone is easily one of the best I’ve used without a cover. Still, I slapped on the in-box silicone case just to be sure. After all, I’m a clumsy man.
The OnePlus 8 Pro has a gorgeous display, good battery life, a decent set of cameras, and fluid performance. It comes in three color options – Glacial Green, Ultramarine Blue, and Onyx Black. It is a sweet deal for $750 for the 12GB RAM + 256GB storage variant. Go grab it!

Samsung Galaxy Note 20 gets a Mystic Red trim, Galaxy Z Flip 5G now comes in Mystic White
Samsung has today introduced two new color options for two of its premium offerings just in time for the holiday season. The Samsung Galaxy Note 20 5G now comes in a new Mystic Red color option. At first look, it looks similar to the bright red makeover that Samsung gave to the Galaxy Note 10. But instead of the glossy finish on the latter, the Mystic Red trim of the Galaxy Note 20 sports a frosted finish, which should do a better job at keeping fingerprint marks and smudges at bay. The new Mystic Red shade of the Galaxy Note 20 joins the existing color palette that includes three options – Mystic Bronze, Mystic Green, and Mystic Gray.
Samsung has also introduced a new color option for its clamshell foldable phone – the Galaxy Z Flip 5G – and is calling it Mystic White. This one has an almost pearl white finish that takes some inspiration from the Mystic White shade of the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra. To recall, Samsung has been selling the Galaxy Z Flip 5G in only two color options so far – Mystic Bronze and Mystic Gray.

Christmas came early for Samsung!
The Galaxy Note 20 5G in Mystic Red and Galaxy Z Flip 5G in Mystic White will be up for grabs starting 12:01 am ET November 30 via Samsung’s official online store. However, Samsung is yet to detail the availability of these new color options via other third-party outlets.
As of now, buyers can avail an instant rebate of $150 when they purchase the Galaxy Note 20 and can also get $550 as a trade-in value. Plus, you also get a $100 voucher that can be used towards the purchase of accessories. Coming to the Galaxy Z Flip 5G, customers can save up to $1000 on the foldable phone’s purchase with an eligible trade-in offer. You can also check out other attractive Cyber Monday offers on devices such as the Galaxy Z Fold 2 and the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra on the Samsung store.
