Google Assistant is getting better at natural conversations and pronouncing names
Google has announced a host of improvements that are coming to its eponymous AI assistant. Starting with recognizing names and pronouncing them correctly, Google Assistant will let you teach it how the names saved in your contacts are pronounced so that it doesn’t falter the next time you tell it to call or text that person. This feature will definitely be a very convenient upgrade for the AI assistant’s abilities, as it often fails to pick up the names, especially if they’re not from an English-speaking culture.
However, Google says that whatever you teach the AI assistant about pronouncing names correctly and learning to recognize them when you utter those names, it will not be stored in a recorded form. In the early phases, this Google Assistant capability to learn the pronunciation from you will initially be limited to English, but will soon be expanded to more languages as well.
Additionally, Google is also employing a technology called Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers (BERT) that will boost its natural language skills and ability to more accurately understand nuanced voice commands with proper context.
For example, when you say a slightly corrected voice command such as “Hey Google, set a timer for 5 minutes, no wait 9 minutes,” Google Assistant will no longer pick the first part of the sentence to name the timer. In this case, the alarm won’t be called ‘5 minutes, no wait’ that will ring after 9 minutes. Instead. Google Assistant will now recognize that you made a mistake while saying the voice command, and it will process it accordingly.
Additionally, it will now be able to add some element of chronology if you’ve created multiple tasks without naming them. For example, if you set two timers one after another without naming the task, Google Assistant will queue them accordingly. Now, when you say ‘Hey Google, cancel the second timer,’ the digital assistant will automatically kill the second timer without asking for its name or simply failing to comprehend and execute.
Another upgrade coming to Google’s AI assistant is called Relative Time Reference. So, if you ask the digital assistant to set an alarm for 4pm, and then follow it up with a request to move it an hour ahead, the assistant will change the alarm timing to 5pm. Earlier, the follow-up request would result in the assistant setting up a new alarm an hour later.
Lastly, Google Assistant will now take into account your previous question and what is being displayed on the screen to more accurately answer your query. For example, if you ask about the temperature in New York, and then follow it up with a voice command such as ‘Hey Google, show me the ten tallest buildings’ without specifying which city or country, the Assistant will automatically deduce that you were talking about New York, based on the conversation history.

Instagram creators will soon be able to make more money
Instagram’s next big step is to help its creators make more money. The company is working on a range of tools including Creator Shops, affiliate commerce, and a “branded content marketplace.” The Creator shops will be part of the eCommerce push. Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg announced the move while speaking with Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram during a live stream on the app.
Starting with Creator Shops, it would be an extension of Instagram’s current shopping features. These are meant to allow businesses to sell products. “We see a lot of creators setting up shops too, and one part of being a content creator business model is you create great content, and then you can sell stuff, and so having creator shops is awesome,” Zuckerberg said.
Moreover, the company is working on a “branded content marketplace.” It is said to help match influencers with sponsors. As per Zuckerberg, this kind of tool could enable up-and-coming talent by letting them monetize. Hence, helping them in creating a kind of “creator middle class.” However, the company official didn’t reveal how these deals might be structured. He said that the plan is to offer “very favorable terms” to creators. “We’re not building this from the perspective of us trying to make a lot of money.”
Further, the company is working on paying more to influencers for promoting products. As Zuckerberg said, creators “should be able to get a cut of the sales of things that they’re recommending and we should build up an affiliate recommendation marketplace to enable that to all happen.” Hence, Instagram will embed affiliate marketing into its product.
As of now, these new tools are a work in progress. While many users already run online shops and form brand partnerships, these kinds of deals mostly happen off-platform. Therefore, Instagram is working on embedding these tools in the app to give the company more control over its creator ecosystem.

Dell Latitude 7320 Detachable is a pricey Surface rival with Thunderbolt 4 ports
Dell has introduced its latest 2-in-1 convertible with a magnetic keyboard – the Latitude 7320 Detachable. A quick glance at its design, and it can be said without a doubt that Dell’s new machine has the Microsoft Surface Pro 7 as its main competitor. However, the Dell offering comes with a few upgrades such as a faster processor, a pair of Thunderbolt 4 ports, and a fast-charging stylus.
For $1,549, you get the base variant with a paltry 4 gigs of RAM, 128GB storage, and an Intel Core i3 processor
The Latitude 7320 Detachable comes armed with a 13-inch FHD+ touch-sensitive display with a blue-light filtering layer and Gorilla Glass 6 DX on top for protection. The bezels are noticeably thinner than what its Microsoft rival has to offer, while the peak brightness output stands at 500 nits. Dell says that its new convertible has an MIL-STD certified build, while the battery inside can go up from 0-80% in just an hour – thanks to the proprietary ExpressCharge technology.
Connectivity is handled by 4G LTE (optional), Gigabit-class WiFi 6, and a pair of Type-C Thunderbolt 4 ports. Microsoft, on the other hand, has skipped the Thunderbolt standard on its Surface 7 Pro citing security threats. Coming back to the Dell machine, the Latitude 7320 Detachable also supports Windows Hello sign-in via an IR camera assembly and can also be armed with a fingerprint reader and SmartCard reader (both optional) as well.
The Dell Latitude 7320 Detachable can be configured with up to an 11 Gen Intel Core i7-1185G7 vPro process with Iris Xe graphics. And oh, the machine is also Intel Evo certified, which means it delivers on certain core criteria such as wake time of less than a second, fast charging support, and more than 9 hours of battery life. There is scope for equipping it with up to 16 gigs of RAM and 512GB of SSD.
The detachable keyboard – which Dell sells separately – has a dedicated docking slot for housing the stylus. Dell claims that the stylus can be fully juiced up in just 30 seconds via wireless charging while sitting in the keyboard slot, and lasts up to 90 minutes on a single charge. The keyboard and its stylus-garage design on the Latitude 7320 Detachable is similar to what Microsoft has done with the Surface Pro X.
Dell says that the Latitude 7320 Detachable 2-in-1 is now up for grabs in the US starting at $1,549 for the base variant with a paltry 4 gigs of RAM, 128GB storage, and an Intel Core i3 processor. If you want the more powerful Core i7 configuration, you’ll have to spend at least $2,159, which is quite steep even by the Microsoft Surface Pro standards.

Samsung Galaxy Buds Pro, Powerbeats Pro and more devices are on sale
We have been getting several headphone deals over the past few days, but we believe that there’s nothing wrong with more options to choose from. First, we find the Samsung Galaxy Buds Pro getting a $20 discount, leaving them available for $180, and the best part is that you can choose any color you want, as savings go across the board. These wireless earbuds feature noise-canceling, water resistance, and a battery that will go for up to 28 hours with ANC off.
If you want a pair of new Powerbeats, you can get one for just $160 over at Best Buy, which translates into $90 savings. However, you will have to settle for the Lava Red or the Spring Yellow color option, as other color variants are a bit more expensive. And if you want to get them on Amazon.com, you can also grab a pair for $176, but Cloud Pink will have to be your pick if you want to score $73.97 in savings.
The Fitbit Versa 3 Health & Fitness Smartwatch is also on sale, and you can get one for $179 after a $51 discount. This price is applied to the Black, the Midnight Blue, and the Pink color variants, while the Thistle option is still selling for full retail price. Other deals feature the Instant Pot Omni Plus 11-in-1 Toaster Oven that’s now available for $170 with $30 savings, which will also work as an air frier and more. The COSORI 12-in-1 Air Fryer is also a great option for those looking for a great present for Mother’s Day, and you can get one for $100 after the same $20 savings. Finally, the Chefman Toast-Air Air Fryer + Oven is getting a $40 discount, meaning you can get yours for $140.

Microsoft is helping Amazon make its dirt-cheap Fire tablets less dumb
Amazon introduced an updated lineup of tablets earlier today – including the Fire HD 10 and its Plus variant. The new tablets are claimed to be slimmer, lighter, faster, brighter, and are still pretty affordable. However, what truly holds them back is the limited app ecosystem because they lack access to Google Play – and with it, access to a whole bunch of productivity apps that can add more appeal to their value. That is about to change with the arrival of Microsoft’s unified Office and OneNote apps on the Fire tablets.
With Office, OneNote, and Outlook app support, the Fire tablets can get some 'real' work done
To recall, the Fire lineup of tablets by Amazon runs a forked version of Android called Fire OS that lacks access to Google Play, something that makes their software extremely constrained – especially considering that the fact Amazon’s own app repository has a very small selection of apps. Yes, there is an unofficial workaround to install Google Play on the Fire tablets, but the target audience is not universally tech-savvy enough to pull it off.

However, with the arrival of Office and OneNote apps, one can actually consider using these dirt-cheap tablets for more than just watching videos, surfing the internet, reading, and doom-scrolling social media. While OneNote is good for taking apps that are accessible on other devices too via cloud sync, the biggest productivity upgrade for Amazon’s Fire tablets comes in the form of Microsoft’s Office app.
The hardware and software requirements of Microsoft's apps are quite low, which is a huge plus
The latter combines Word, Excel, and PowerPoint in a single app, complete with cloud sync support. Aside from the usual job of creating new documents (as well as editing and sharing them), the Office app comes with a handful of other useful features such as the ability to scan pictures and adding them to documents, turning pictures of tables into spreadsheets, ability to sign PDFs with your finger on the touch-sensitive screen, etc.
And to go with the whole productivity aspect of using the Office app on its Fire tablets, Amazon has also launched productivity bundles that include a magnetically detachable keyboard case made by Fintie, and a 12-month subscription to Microsoft 365 service that offers access to Office apps and 1TB of cloud storage. And the best part is that the bundle is still relatively affordable at $219.99. Another advantage here is that the Office app can run on Fire tablets with as little as 1GB of RAM and Android 8 (or a later version) handling things on the software.
The new Fire HD 10 tablets also get a keyboard case to make the best out of these Microsoft apps
Plus, the app download size is less than 90MB, which is another hurdle taken care of. So, unless you have a really, really old Fire tablet, you can download and run the Office and OneNote apps on the device. The Outlook and OneDrive apps have already been available on the Amazon app store for a while, adding more to the whole ‘productivity on Fire tablets’ discussion here.
Of course, your mileage will vary depending on the tablet’s innards and the kind of files you’re handling, but for the most part, at least the new Fire HD 10 and its Plus model – both of which come equipped with an octa-core processor and at least 3 gigs of RAM – will handle your workload with ease. The Amazon Fire HD 10 and Fire HD 10 Plus are now up for pre-order from Amazon, and will start shipping next month.

Spotify is raising the price of several of its plans in the US, UK, and Europe
Spotify has announced the increase in the subscription price for several of its plans across a number of regions including the US, UK, and parts of Europe. These new prices will go into effect starting April 30. The company has sent out emails to UK customers alerting them to a variety of increases. The pricing change includes Student plans, Spotify Family plan, the Duo plan, and more.
Spotify is raising the price of several of its plans ranging from £4.99 to £14.99 per month. The Spotify Student subscription price is getting increased from £4.99 to £5.99 per month. On the other hand, the price of a Duo plan is being raised from £12.99 to £13.99. Plus, you will now have to pay £16.99 instead of £14.99 per month for the Spotify Family plan. These prices are valid for the UK.
Coming to the other parts of Europe, Ireland is also seeing the Spotify price hike. Spotify’s Student and Duo plans are increasing to €5.99 and €12.99 per month, respectively. Further, the Family plan is seeing a change of €3 from €14.99 to €17.99 per month. As per The Verge, some countries in Asia and South America will see similar price increases soon.
The company will provide affected Spotify subscribers a one-month grace period before prices are automatically increased. Hence, a subscriber is likely to see an increase during the June billing cycle.
“We offer a variety of subscription plans tailored to our users’ needs, and we occasionally update our prices to reflect local macroeconomic factors and meet market demands while offering an unparalleled service,” a Spotify spokesperson told The Verge.
As for the US subscribers, Spotify is increasing the price of its Family plans. Instead of $15 per month, the plan will now cost $16 per month starting April 30. For the unaware, the Spotify Family plan allows up to six members in the same household access to an ad-free listening experience.
“We are increasing the price of Premium Family so we can continue to bring you new content and features that you can enjoy as a family and as individuals,” the company says in the message

Telegram now lets you schedule voice chats and gets better at viewing media
The Telegram app has received a new update on Android and iOS that adds a ton of new features. The most notable one is support for scheduling your voice chats in channels. First reported when the v7.7 beta started rolling out earlier this month, users can now schedule their live group audio interactions in advance. Once scheduled, a countdown timer for the upcoming group voice chat will appear at the top of the channel for all members.
To schedule a voice chat for channels, tap on the menu icon in the top-right corner, select Start voice chat, and then hit on the Schedule Voice Chat option at the bottom. In addition to group voice chat scheduling, Telegram is also expanding the scope of its in-app payments system. The app now lets you pay directly from within a chat after adding support for eight popular payment service providers that include Stripe, Yandex, and Payme among others.
Additionally, the updated version of Telegram now lets users directly pinch and zoom on an image in their chats. You no longer have to first open an image in full screen by tapping on it. Moreover, while watching a video, pressing and holding on the left (or right) side of the screen rewinds (or fast forwards) the video by 15 seconds. And on the app’s Android version, users can also double-tap on either side of the screen to jump forward or back by 10 seconds.
Telegram notes that users no longer have to rely on the Play Store for getting the app’s latest version. Instead, if they don’t see the update option in Play Store, they can head over to the official telegram.org page to download the latest version. “You are likely to get new versions several days or weeks faster this way because you won’t have to wait for updates to be reviewed by the store,” the company says in its blog post.

Apple updates Clips to add fun AR Spaces using iPhone 12 Pro’s LiDAR sensor
Apple’s Clips app that allows users to create videos using filters, emojis, and a host of other fun effects has received an update (v3.1). The app now takes advantage of the LiDAR sensor on the iPhone 12 Pro duo and iPad Pro to create cool AR effects that overlay on your surroundings to make your videos look more fun and immersive. These filters come to life courtesy of a new feature in the app called AR Spaces. Following are the seven new AR Spaces that have been added to the Clips app:
Prism: Ribbons of rainbow light scan the walls, floors, and objects in a room.
Confetti: Celebratory bursts of confetti fall and accumulate on flat surfaces.
Disco: Shining lights reflect off the disco ball that hangs from the ceiling of the space.
Dance Floor: Colorful tiles of light dance in patterns across the floor.
Sparkles: Golden sparkle emoji and white glitter fill the space.
Stardust: Magical trails of starlight encircle and follow a person in the video.
Hearts: Floating heart balloons bubble up within the space.
“Combined with the tight integration of Apple’s hardware and software, Clips 3.1 now enables users to record amazing videos with magical effects that map to the shape of a room and the objects within it,” says Apple in the official newsroom post. The company adds that the LiDAR sensor on supported iPad Pro and iPhone 12 Pro models first scans a room and then shows a live preview of the filter that appears as an overlay over surrounding elements such as walls, objects, and the floor.
More AR Spaces will be added to the Clips app down the road
Adding more details about the AR Spaces, Apple says that the Clips app employs what it calls AR segmentation and occlusion to identify the subject and then applies the filters around them. Users can choose to add more elements such as stickers, labels, and emojis over the AR Spaces to make their videos even more appealing, irrespective of the aspect ratio and orientation they are recorded in. The company also promises that more AR filters will be added to the Clips app in the foreseeable future, and users can now choose to be notified when new content arrives in the app.
